Officials at the Agriculture Department in Herat Province have reported of noticeable increase in honey production in the province.
More than 20 tons of honey has been produced in the past one year and officials expect the amount to increase further this year.
“Of a total of three thousand hives, about 20 tons of pure honey was obtained,” said Mirwais Sadat, Head of Agriculture Department in Herat.
He added honey production has left people optimistic and is expected to boost to over 30 tons this year.
Meanwhile, Samia Karimi, a beekeeper in Herat, said over 150 women in the province are involved in beekeeping.
Karimi regarded honey produced in Herat as highly pure with good quality, and said the province is ready to exports its honey products to foreign countries.
She cited absence of support for honey industry, lack of marketing tools and presence of artificial honey from foreign countries as major impediments to the growth of local honey industry.
Currently, beekeeping has expanded to 12 districts of Herat and hundreds of people are engaged in beekeeping business.
Experts believe development of honey industry will generate employment opportunities for citizens and contribute to the country’s GDP growth.
